Fell Weekend Report Summer 2016

On the weekend of the 23rd of July, thirteen club members stayed at Honister YHA for a couple of days of fell running. Nick and Ian organised a fun programme!

The Saturday morning’s weather was warm and sunny. The session was taken by Nick and started with advice on fell running shoes, clothing and equipment, even down to the basics of how to lace your fell running shoes correctly so they fit securely and don’t come off the first time you hit a bog. After this, the group headed across the road to the slopes of Dale Head for a demo of the different techniques of getting up and down the fell efficiently and without falling over too much! The “speed-skating” uphill method proved to be very taxing and amusing!

By the end of the session, those who hadn’t fell run before, had gained a great deal of confidence and speed. The session ended with a run up to the summit cairn of Dale Head and a superb view!

After lunch, Ian showed the group basic navigation techniques using a map and compass in preparation for the navigation exercise that afternoon. We split into three teams with a promise of a prize for the first team to make it back to the YHA, having visited all the checkpoints. Ian had set up a challenging exercise that took us up Dale Head twice, to Hindscarth, Dale Head Tarn and various locations roundabout.

Unfortunately, when Ian checked the gps tracks at home, the “winning” team had missed a checkpoint and the second team had gone to the wrong river crossing, meaning the last team, Ian’s, were the winners! Too late to get the chocolates though! After the evening meal, Ian’s annual Fell Weekend Quiz got underway. Ian asked his usual challenging mix of questions and after a brain stressing session, the team of Dan, James, Nick and Tom won the bottle of wine.

Sunday morning, the weather had become misty and drizzly, ideal for the group run and building of the fell techniques and navigation skills from Saturday. We headed straight up the fell from the slate mine following the fell runners trod up to Grey Knotts, over to Brandreth and then an off path route, using navigation skills, to the Haystacks path and on to Haystacks summit.

Conditions were very misty, wet and slippy underfoot making it hard going, especially the descent down to Scarth Gap from Haystacks. From there, we headed down towards Buttermere Lake and easier running along the lake path to Buttermere village for cakes, coffee and tea and more!

The Honister Rambler bus back up to the YHA proved to be an entertaining ride when a traffic jam entailed on a very narrow bit of road, where the skill, or mostly the lack of skill, in the drivers squeezing past the bus provided much amusement! The driver earned a round of applause for her patience! We arrived back up at Honister, late afternoon and headed home after another cracking DAC Fell Weekend!

Many thanks to Simon, the manager at the YHA, for his hospitality and to Ian for organising the navigation and quiz.

Club Championship

Our 2016 championship is a friendly competition between DAC members, there are 2 joker races per year which are pulled at random to prevent anyone taking it too seriously! The championship plan can be found here. The results will be presented at the Annual Awards night by the male and female team captains.
